Research shows that family involvement and support is a crucial element of an individual’s success in substance use treatment. However, there is often a divide between families and providers. Family dynamics, provider comfort level and organizational factors can all impact how providers engage families in the recovery process.
Finding Healing: Helping Families Affected by Substance Use is a two-day training that anyone working with families should attend. The training will give you information, tools and techniques to help families improve their functioning and ability to support the individual in recovery.
Participants will learn about the effects substance use has on family members including spouses, children, grandparents and extended family. They will also learn about the well-documented benefits of family involvement along with the barriers that often impede family engagement including systems-level issues and common family dynamics like enmeshment and pseudomutuality.
The second part of the training offers multiples tools and techniques for healing including ways to emphasize family strengths, address family resistance and create a Family Recovery Plan. Participants also learn about the elements of a strong psychoeducation plan for families and the importance of helping families build communication, problem-solving and parenting skills. Because organizational factors also impact the ways we serve families, tools to create a family-friendly agency and integrate family therapy into an organization are provided and practiced by participants.
At the close of this training, participants will be able to:
- understand and describe ways that substance use impacts the family
- identify common responses of family members impacted by substance use
- describe the benefits and barriers of engaging family members in treatment
- learn how to apply tools to heal families at a direct practice and organizational level
